How a session works

Porter County Amateur Radio Club runs a W5YI volunteer examiner team and tests for every class — Technician, General and Amateur Extra. You may attempt more than one element in the same sitting, so if you pass Technician you can sit General the same morning.

Sessions run on the second Saturday of every month. The room opens at 8:00 AM and testing starts at 9:00 AM Central. The dates listed above come straight from our HamStudy schedule, so they are always current.

Fee

The exam fee is $14.00, collected on-site. Credit or debit card is preferred.

Registering

Pre-registration is preferred — use the Register / details link on whichever session you want, above. Walk-ins are welcome, so come along even if you did not register in advance.

Applicants under 13

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act requires extra paperwork before we can test a child under 13. Complete the ExamTools COPPA form, email it to coppa@examtools.org, and copy ve@k9pc.club. Please do this before exam day rather than on it.

Questions

Email ve@k9pc.club and one of the VE team will answer. The club also meets on the second Friday of every month at the MAAC Foundation and visitors are welcome — a good chance to ask a VE in person before you sit an exam.

What to bring

  • A photo ID (or, for minors, a parent or guardian with ID).
  • Your FCC Registration Number (FRN). Get one free at fcc.gov before exam day — it is required.
  • The exam fee. Check with us on accepted payment methods.
  • Your current license and any CSCEs, if you are upgrading.
  • A calculator is allowed; a phone is not.

Study resources

The full question pool is public, and practice exams draw from it verbatim. Most people pass by drilling until they score consistently in the high 80s.
